It all began with a big dream – and a single match.

In 1988 Hank’s opened a tiny walk-up barbecue shack on a small side street North of downtown Harrisonburg. Every morning at 6:00 am Hank would throw a single match on a pile of charcoal and hickory. He would only sell three items: pork BBQ, beef BBQ and BBQ chicken, and concentrated on doing these three perfectly. As word grew, so did his business.

Now, Hank’s has two locations, McGaheysville and Dayton,  and a growing catering business. Hank’s at Dayton offers the same “REAL DEAL” barbecue that it has always offered. By “REAL DEAL” we mean true, authentic barbecue-our fuel is wood and only wood-no electric, no gas, just pure hardwood. Because of this, Hank’s has consistently been voted Best Barbecue in the Valley by Virginia Living Magazine and The Daily News Record. 

But Hank’s is more than great barbecue. Every item on the menu at both locations and catering is Made From Scratch. Hank’s offers classic sandwiches made to order, fresh salads, hearty buddha bowls, homemade soups, and made from scratch bread. At 9am customers can order a Brisket, Egg and Cheese sandwich on a made from scratch english muffin. Or they can choose a classic Bacon, Egg and Cheese sandwich.

For those needing to take something home for the family, Hank’s at Dayton offers grab and go soups, barbecue by the pound and family meal packages that are hot, ready to eat and feeds 4 or 6 people.
